The UK Government Unveils £2.75 Billion Initiative for Home Energy Efficiency Upgrade

The UK Government Unveils £2.75 Billion Initiative for Home Energy Efficiency Upgrade

The UK government has earmarked an additional £2.75 billion to facilitate home energy efficiency enhancements and the installation of heat pumps until 2028. This allocation encompasses:

    – An extra £1.25 billion for the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund aimed at supporting insulation and retrofitting in approximately 140,000 publicly owned housing units.
    – A further £1.5 billion for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, offering households grants of £7,500 to switch from gas boilers to electric heat pumps. This extended funding is expected to cover over 200,000 heat pump installations.
    – £500 million allocated to a new local authority grant scheme intended to aid 60,000 low-income homes and poorly insulated housing units with upgrades such as improved insulation.

The augmented funding seeks to alleviate more households from fuel poverty while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions. It provides a clear signal to the market to escalate efforts and implement widespread improvements.

However, some sectors argue that the package still falls short of the required annual £6 billion needed across all housing sectors to comprehensively slash emissions and energy expenses. Moving ahead, a concerted cross-party commitment is imperative to finance the substantial efficiency push crucial for meeting climate and economic objectives.

As aptly summarized by Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho, “This funding will propel us further and contribute to enhancing 200,000 cold, low-income, and social homes.”
